Sugar Land looking into publicly-owned baseball team, stadum

By Staff • on March 19, 2009

After voters recently signaled their approval for further exploration of a minor league baseball team in Sugar Land, officials have apparently been looking into whether the stadium and team should be municipally-owned.

Franklin County, Ohio recently opened its own municipal baseball park and the County also owns the team.  Franklin County official Don Brown said he has been contacted by county officials from the Sugar Land area inquiring about how the financing for the project was accomplished.  He tells interested parties that  the secret is that the team and the stadium are publicly owned, meaning they’re exempt from taxes and owner’s expectations of profits.

“And because it’s publicly owned, we were able to use the county’s credit to borrow money and get financing at cheap rates,” Brown said.
